Causes of Lymphedema

Lymphedema (LIM-Fah-DEE-ma) is the swelling in a body part, usually an arm or leg, caused by the accumulation of lymph fluid. It may interfere with normal movement and is sometimes painful. Lymphedema can develop as a result of surgery, radiation treatment, birth defect or trauma. It’s a chronic, progressive condition that requires lifelong management. Lymphedema is best treated when detected early. 

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

Our experienced team of therapists are trained in Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), an effective, noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment for lymphedema. Therapists work together to assess the individual needs of patients and provide care through a specialized program that includes: 

  • Specialized massage techniques (manual lymph drainage) 
  • Compression therapy
  • Skin care 
  • Exercise

If left untreated, lymphedema can lead to serious medical consequences. Ask your physician if you would benefit from RIM’s Lymphedema Treatment Program. A prescription from your physician will be necessary to initiate treatment.

Lymphedema Management

DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s (RIM) skilled team of physical and occupational therapists in southeast Michigan have advanced training in lymphedema education, evaluation and management. Our lymphedema prevention clinic provides education that empowers patients to reduce their individual risk of lymphedema and includes a baseline measurement essential to assessing for any lymphedema after therapy.
