Don’t Skip Cardiac Rehab
Sep 22, 2020Cardiac Rehab has shown to improve patient survival, as well as reduce risk for a recurrent heart attack or serious heart incident. Despite the many benefits of cardiac rehab, many patients don’t take advantage of the program.
Cardiac rehab is an important step in getting your heart healthy again, says Cate Spurr, an Exercise Physiologist with the DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s (RIM) Cardiac Rehab Program. “Cardiac rehab is a medically supervised program focused on aerobic and strengthening exercises to improve the overall function of your heart muscle,” adds Spurr.
Cardiac rehab can help benefit those who have had:
- Heart attack
- Heart surgery
- Recent angioplasty or stent placement
- Heart valve repair or replacement
- Heart or lung transplant
- Heart failure
- Stable chest pain
- Other heart conditions or risk factors
At RIM, all cardiac rehab patients are monitored for their EKG, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and other vitals throughout their hour-long rehab session. Therapists also provide heart healthy resources like proper nutrition, stress reduction, diabetes control and smoking cessation.
Most major insurances cover cardiac rehab.
