A severe burn can be a seriously devastating injury - not only physically but emotionally.

The Burn Injury Rehabilitation Program at DMC is a collaborative partnership between Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) and Detroit Receiving Hospital’s (DRH) burn injury service. Detroit Receiving is a verified burn center, as recognized by the American Burn Association for its advanced level of burn injury care.

RIM’s physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, nurses, doctors and speech-language pathologists, have long provided specialized care and treatments needed to address all aspects of burn rehabilitation.

The goal of our comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation program is to maximize independence, so burn survivors can transition back to home, work and their communities. We work closely with the patient and their family to create an individualized plan that includes:

  • Increasing range of motion
  • Improving endurance
  • Wound Care
  • Scar management
  • Pain management
  • Emotional support
  • Case management
  • Addressing speech/swallowing impairments
  • Improving overall functional mobility
  • Performing activities of daily living
  • Community reintegration

Our interventions are vital to the physical, emotional, social, and functional rehabilitation of patients who have suffered burns. Rehabilitation evaluation begins early alongside surgical treatment, and continues throughout hospitalization.  Rehabilitative care often may continue for as long as two years in the outpatient setting with ongoing follow-up and burn scar management.
